What's the Redness in your Skin trying to share with you?

Here’s the scoop on couperose, a skin condition that’s on the rise:
Couperose causes excessively red skin with broken capillaries, generally on the nose and over the cheeks. The irritation caused by inflammation is uncomfortable as the skin becomes overly sensitive and prone to excessive perspiration that can only aggravate the irritation, particularly on hot and humid days. An excess of red blood in the capillaries makes them visible.
Couperose is whats known as a Fire element condition in PHYTO5® skincare and treatment protocols. The more severe it is, the longer the treatment series will be. Left untreated, it invites an Earth element condition to develop (blemishes, toxicity, acne, psoriasis, enlarged pores). When this occurs, the condition evolves into roseacea, a difficult condition to treat.
The balancing of Fire element energy includes red blood circulation and the application of calming and balancing topical products.
As with all sensitive skin conditions, the proper cleanser and toner must be mild yet effective, and the hydrating products must also be calming and balancing. PHYTO5® offers an entire line of products that will remarkably assist with couperose.
Couperose can be aggravated by your living conditions. Heres a list of what to avoid if you have couperose:
- UV exposure
- Temperature extremes, particularly heat
- Sudden changes in temperature
- Overuse of a sauna
- Long hot showers
- Very hot drinks
- Extremes of water temperature
- Hot, spicy foods
- Eating too quickly
- Stress causing nervous conditions
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Large amounts of caffeine
- Processed food diet lacking mineral rich vegetables and fruits
- Abrasive skin cleansers and cleansing methods
More On Understanding Couperose: What Professionals Say
- A couperose skin condition is usually found in thin, dry, delicate, and mature skins. The condition is characterized by weakening of the capillary walls. The esthetician must exercise great care and work with a light touch when giving a facial treatment for couperose skin.Professional Estheticians Workbook, Gerson, Cambridge University Press, Jan. 1, 1992
- Though it is often difficult to treat, a couperose complexion can be improved over time, especially if you improve capillary strength with herbs that are high in flavonoids (pigments found in many green and yellow plants).Herbs for Health and Healing: A Drug-Free Guide to Prevention and Cure, Kathi Keville and Peter Korn, Berkley Books, Dec. 1, 1998
- As women age, they begin to lose the hormone estrogen that causes thinning of the epidermis. Tiny capillaries underneath skin become more visible and create an unpleasant look. Consumption of alchohol, tobacco, and caffeine can dramatically increase this process. Besides, walls of capillaries become weaker and can break very easily, creating so-called angiomas. Eastern European Beauty Secrets and Skin Care Techniques: A Practical Manual for Skincare Professionals, Svetlana Ferguson, RoseDog Books, Pittsburgh, PA, 2011
- Couperose is caused when the blood vessels are not elastic enough to handle the flow of blood that is forced through them. This causes them to break or distend. Natural Skin Care: Alternative and Traditional Techniques, John Loughran, Health and Harmony Books, New Delhi, 1996
- When there is a sudden rush of blood because of blushing, excessive heat, or other stimuli, the capillaries expand, making room for the increase of blood. When the amount of blood recedes, the capillaries contract to their normal size. If the capillary wall is not sufficiently elastic, it will expand but not contract again to its original shape or size. Milady Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary, 4th Edition, M. Varinia Michalun and Joseph C. Dinardo, Cengage Learning, New York, 2015.
*Angioma: an abnormal growth produced by the dilation or new formation of blood vessels.
